Canon Pyon CE Primary School is a thriving rural school providing an excellent, high quality primary education within a safe, caring, Christian environment. The school is well-supported by the local community and is a main focal point for village life. Its high standards of education, discipline and pastoral care attract pupils from within and without the catchment area, making it a school with a strong sense of pride and purpose.
Education
SATs results for 2007 were well above the county and national average, with achievements in KS2 English, maths and science, 92.9%, 78.6% and 100% respectively. Children are taught in accordance with the national curriculum, with all core subjects covered. The school has recently acquired interactive whiteboards in all the classrooms which give children a vast range of resources to draw upon.
Community spirit
There is a strong sense of community and camaraderie at the school, with pupils taking a pride in their own achievements and those of the school as a whole. The children are taught to encourage and praise one another as individuals and as a group. On sports’ day, the four school houses strengthen the ethos of competition and foster a belief in team spirit.
Pastoral care
The school’s code of conduct is based on Christian principles of care and concern. The purpose is to develop the character of the pupils to respect their own person and belongings, and to respect other people and their property. All pupils are made to feel that they belong. They are treated fairly and are valued as worthwhile individuals. Every opportunity is taken to praise the children for good work, effort, courage and kindness.
Eco school
The children are encouraged to respect and care for the world around them. With this in mind, the children tend a vegetable garden, feed the birds in the bird garden and look after the pond and wildlife area. There is also a newly-built outdoor classroom which enables children to learn in the fresh air. The school is taking part in the eco-schools programme for promoting environmental awareness, and has recently achieved the silver award.
Healthy school
The school is involved in the Herefordshire Healthy Schools Partnership and has achieved ‘national healthy schools status’. Children are taught the value of a healthy lifestyle and participate in food technology days, science work about the human body and a variety of sporting activities. There is also a swimming programme and many after-school clubs such as netball, football and cricket.
Mission statement
The school aims to serve its community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian beliefs and practice. It encourages an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith. We aim to offer pupils a rich and stimulating environment which encourages them to develop to their full potential, and which will provide a fund of happy memories for the future.
